ABSTRACT

The cloister of the Cathedral of Saint-Trophime in Arles comprises two Romanesque galleries, the northern and eastern, and two Gothic galleries, the western and southern. All four were built in several stages between the first half of the twelfth century and the end of the fourteenth century.1 Although the sculptures in the cloister have been the subject of numerous studies relating to their dating, style, and iconography, almost no attempts have been made to understand the iconography of the images in the eastern gallery (see Figure 3.1).2
