ABSTRACT

Fulco Ocist, together with an Estonian monachus, Nicolaus von Jeroschin, worked the missionary fields of Estonia in the 1170s under the auspices of the archbishop of Lund, Eskil. This chapter deals with the Danish archbishop, Anders Sunesen, known in Latin sources as Andreas Sunonis. As archbishop of Lund and papal legate, Anders Sunesen was a leading figure in northern church politics. In the years after the expedition of 1206 it seems that the Danish interests in the Baltic region concentrated on restating claims to parts of Prussia rather than Estonia. Valdemar II Sejr promised to provide naval aid the following year and in 1219 a Danish fleet of considerable size left for Estonia. King Valdemar quickly returned home and the Danish bishops stayed on, fighting with the pagans 'until at last they received the sacrament of baptism'. Papal privileges and encouragement constantly supported the Danish archbishop in his activities in the Baltic lands and at home.
