ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the author focuses on seventeen canvases painted at Urbino in the Marche in the year 1621 by the Veronese painter Claudio Ridolfi assisted by the Urbinese Girolamo Cialdieri. These were executed for the entry into Urbino of Federigo Ubaldo, son of Francesco Maria II the last duke of Urbino and his bride Claudia de' Medici. They formed part of a more elaborate programme of permanent as well as temporary structures, prepared for the entry on 28 May 1621. Another index of the status of Federigo Ubaldo as the hope of the future is provided by the two extraordinarily rich portraits of him in infancy which was exhibited in the 'Ultimi Della Rovere' exhibition. Another witness to his importance is provided by the double portrait of his parents Francesco Maria and Livia Della Rovere, probably painted by Federico Barocci in about 1605.
