ABSTRACT

The principal map libraries set up for public access remained the six legal deposit libraries, namely the British Library, Map Library, the National Libraries of Scotland and Wales, and the university libraries of Cambridge, Oxford and Trinity College Dublin. In addition substantial map collections continued to flourish at the Royal Geographical Society. Formed as a special interest group of the British Cartographic Society (BCS), the Map Curators' Group continued to provide the focus for map library interests, and to be the lead organization in arranging courses and seminars. The annual Map Curators' Workshops, normally held as a pre-meeting before the BCS Annual Symposium each September, were well supported and put on lively and well-attended programmes. Few meetings and seminars convened for map curators avoided discussion of the issues of map library automation and of problems arising from the appearance of maps in digital format and on new distribution media.
