ABSTRACT

The main body for local studies librarians continued to be the Library Association Local Studies Group, which by 2000 was reported to have over 1,600 members. Through its regional branches and its periodical The local studies librarian it keeps those working in local studies in touch with each other and offers guidance in the form of courses and conferences. Education for local studies librarians was well established by 1990. At a formal level several library schools including Birmingham, Newcastle and the University of Wales Aberystwyth offered options as part of their full-time undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The most important aspect of organization and administration in libraries during the decade was the reorganization of local government in both England and Wales and in Scotland. Reorganization in Wales and Scotland likewise involved changes in boundaries as they moved to unitary authorities in 1996.
