ABSTRACT

The notae in the Trinity Collectio Lanfranci manuscript can be divided into three groups. The first group comprises nota in the form of a capital letter A that is identical in its form to that written by the text scribe. The second group is characterized by a two-story minuscule a usually written with a blunt nib. The back of the letter is always sloped, with a small entry stroke at the head, finished with a large curved stroke at the foot. The third group is also characterized by a two-story minuscule a. What is certain is that the Lanfranc subscription in the 1075 document is remarkably close to that in the 1072 one. Lanfranc’s subscription in the 1072 document is smaller, written with a smaller nib, than either the subscription in the 1075 document or the notae in the Trinity manuscript.
