ABSTRACT

The development of the monetary system was one of the first aspects of government to attract Alfred’s attention. By the end of the first decade of his reign, he had effected two radical reforms, restoring the fineness of the coinage and expanding the mint network, while introducing a new weight standard, new classical designs and a new denomination, the halfpenny. These were achievements indeed in a period when for much of the time his kingdom was under attack or threat of attack from Viking invaders.
