ABSTRACT
We may remind ourselves first of all of some relevant dates: Alfred was born in 849, acceded to the throne in 871 after three of his brothers, and died on 26 October 899. Arnulf, an extramarital (not illegitimate) son of Karlmann and the noblewoman Liutswind was born around 850, became king in November 887 (ousting his uncle Charles the Fat), emperor in 896, and died on 8 December 899.
