ABSTRACT

This chapter presents an example of a localized intervention intended to advance a plan for a crucial area: the aim is to construct a 'green system' on the north side of the Milan metropolitan area and the adjoining ring of diverse regional green areas. In accordance with the European Spatial Development Perspective, sustainable urban development is recognized as a multisectoral and global concept in which environmental, economic and social aspects are integrated and coordinated within a comprehensive view. To address policies in a more project-oriented and comprehensive way and to promote public-public and public-private partnerships, new types of 'informal agreements' or 'negotiated agreements' have been worked out in Italy. Monza Park is an important Italian cultural heritage site, due to the presence of the royal villa and a number of monumental buildings from the 18th century. Due to increased environmental awareness, the need to complete the territorial draft of the green network has been confirmed by public administrations.
