ABSTRACT

This chapter describes the issues generated by members of a multidisciplinary ‘Creativity in Design’, research cluster. It also describes previous creativity research in Human Computer Interaction (HCI). Psychologists study human behaviour in creating problem solutions, artists consider the ‘practice’ and ‘craft skills’ involved in creating works of art, and researchers in HCI consider technologically supporting creative processes. The development of technological support for enhancing individual and group creativity requires a substantial investment from researchers and developers. The rationale for the cluster activities relates to identifying the fundamental research questions, priorities and agendas raised by the cluster participants in considering how to address the need for a better understanding of creativity and creative practices in design, across disciplines. The chapter reviews new insights gained and research questions generated, as a result of the workshop activities. Creativity involves exploratory behaviour to identify what is possible with the tool, what can be expressed, and how.
