ABSTRACT

The ‘Design Imaging’ project was formed with the intention of encouraging the use of the senses to inspire new perspectives in all areas of design and for all participants. The project aimed to develop a stimulating and exciting environment that would provoke change in how the design process is implemented. In order for designer to communicate their ideas to colleagues, customers and the public, images are often used to augment or replace text and the spoken word – these images are normally visual and monoscopic. Investigation of metaphor proved to be a crucial approach to the problem of communication and of multimodality in design in general. Cluster membership grew as the project progressed and attracted the interest of researchers from other disciplines – demonstrating the potentially significant contribution of the Design Imaging concept. In contrast to multidisciplinary approaches that simply bring together separate skills, the interdisciplinarity the cluster aimed to achieve and support, demands the integration of different disciplinary perspectives.
