ABSTRACT

Researchers from the building design community were found to be looking at design performance. The deliverables of the Design Performance cluster can be summarised as follows: identified current activity in design performance; identification of opportunities for future research; development of key themes and research projects; and identification of groupings to move forward with proposals. The Design Performance cluster believe that research is needed which will define and synthesise the dimensions of design. The Design Performance cluster are advocating further research with the aim of developing a performance measurement system that enables a more complete understanding of design’s contribution to the national economy. The focus and deliverable of the workshop was a SWOT (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) analysis of UK design performance research, and included a review of the current literature and identification of opportunities for future research. The chapter concludes by highlighting gaps in knowledge and discussing the Design Performance cluster’s future research agenda.
