ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the implications of the visibility of screen on information display and interaction. The research cluster understood screen as a designed interface with a central place in representation and communication of the social landscape, and the cultural and technological imagination, as well as having economic significance in the digital era of the 21st century. The ‘designing out’ of the screen is a feature of the i-shuffle that demands a change in use, a repositioning of the lack of choice of tune as an act of freedom; a randomness that frees the user from the demands of choice. Workshops were followed by a public evening keynote lecture drawing upon the expertise of interdisciplinary ‘visionaries’ working with a focus on the screen. Historical analysis of the screen proved to be a particularly rich focus for exploring the different perspectives that participants brought to the analysis and understanding of screen.
