This chapter provides an overview and summary of the Mindfulness-Based Therapy for Insomnia (MBTI) program, including the theoretical background, the structure of the program, and the emerging research evidence to support its use for people with chronic insomnia. MBTI is an eight-week group program intended for people with chronic insomnia disorder who have persistent difficulty falling or staying asleep. The process of cultivating awareness, metacognitive shifting, and embodying a mindful stance is usually not a linear progression; it is an iterative process that involves patience and practice of the mindfulness principles. It involves letting go of the attachment to certain beliefs about sleep, increasing flexibility in the response to insufficient sleep, and accepting alternative pathways to well-being. The MBTI program is delivered in a group format and integrates mindfulness-based stress reduction and mindfulness-based cognitive therapy with behavioral therapy for insomnia.
