ABSTRACT

Performance management can be defined as ‘a holistic approach to performance that spans numerous performance dimensions that may be fundamental to the effective delivery of an organisation’s mission’ (O’Boyle and Hassan, 2014:3). It is a process that makes use of the systems and procedures that an organisation has, in order to meet the requirements of stakeholders. Performance management operationalises organisational strategy in that strategy and planning activities set the objectives and establish the plans that the performance management process must deliver. Thus, performance management is an essential requirement of managing the business of sport and should be an integral part of the operation of all sport organisations. This chapter addresses the need for performance management in the sport sector and its role in the delivery of services. It considers issues relating to performance management and then discusses performance evaluation and measurement. It concludes with a case study of the performance framework determining the funding for English National Governing Bodies (NGBs).
