ABSTRACT
This chapter will provide analysis of the argument that those engaged in the management of sport should afford it special significance on account of its supposed social and cultural significance within society (Smith and Stewart, 2010). It will critically engage with the assertion that arguments around the ‘specificity of sport’ are conditional upon the particular type of sport one is referring to and indeed informed by the context in which certain sports exist.
