ABSTRACT

The way sport leagues are organized around the world differs considerably. It is well known that North American sport leagues are owned and organized differently as compared to the European model. The history of field hockey in India is long and successful. The country has won eight Olympic gold medals. From 1928 to 1956, India dominated the sport and won each gold medal possible, followed by gold medals at the Games in Tokyo 1964 and Moscow 1980. The most notable difference from other leagues is that the teams playing are newly composed by an auctioning system no later than every three years. The marquee player is a specialty of the league: for marketing purposes each team has one player who gives "a face" to the team during the season. Marquee players have an exceptional career and have leadership qualities. The attraction of best international players was possible because India could use a window kept open by the international hockey federation.
