ABSTRACT

Theatre of the Oppressed New York City (TONYC) strength lies in its ability to form partnerships with community-based organizations, neighborhoods, activist groups, and local government offices, enabling TONYC to focus on play-making with popular theatre troupes and producing free Forum and Legislative Theatre events for crowds that represent New York City. Some of the communities with which TONYC works include homeless adults and youth, people living with HIV/AIDS, LGBTQ groups, immigrants, veterans, formerly incarcerated people, and court-involved youth. Theatre of the Oppressed (TO) has to be easily accessed by people facing oppression—close to other important resources, free, nourishing, and in acknowledgement of the compromises that oppressed people have to make every day to survive. TONYC put its energy into practicing and multiplying TO as an essential tool in the struggle for justice and liberation in our city.
