ABSTRACT

This chapter expresses that there are many ways in which adolescents and emerging adults who are seeking information about death and/or coping with loss and grief are using contemporary technology. Caring adults need to help adolescents and those on the cusp of adulthood to recognize misinformed and dangerous online sources and to help them learn what is safe and not safe to post on various sites. Educators and parents also must be aware that the age of use of social networking sites is moving downward and that younger adolescents also tend to have fewer privacy concerns. Yet embedded within adolescents and emerging adults' extensive use of technology is the need for self-exploration, identity development, self- and peer-reflection, and social connection. Cyberspace occupies all dimensions of the ecological life space of children and adolescents, affecting their most intimate interactions as well as providing a cultural context for their development.
