ABSTRACT

Performance analysis is used in football to assess technical, tactical, and physical performance, both individually and collectively, and generally in the competition setting. Factual evidence derived from analyses provides an opportunity to critically appraise how players are performing through qualitative and quantitative assessment and is one of the foundations for providing feedback to coaches and players. Performance analysis has grown in popularity and is firmly rooted at elite playing standards. This is mainly due to a greater recognition within football circles and importantly by applied practitioners of its potential benefits to impact decision-making and prescription in the training and match lifecycle. Performance analysis personnel are generally employed to conduct analyses in first team, reserve team, women’s teams and youth academy environments. Irrespective of their specific role, the analysis department essentially supports coaching staff by systematically collecting pre-, live-, and post-match analytical information on technical and tactical performance.
