ABSTRACT

Institutes of sport exist in various guises all around the world. Some have a long and storied history, others are relative upstarts. Every organisation has a mission statement and naturally too. Typically, the finished product is pretty similar to every other vision and mission and probably fits neatly in that box as well as any other. However, the value is in the process of developing such statements of intent and there are usually some essential components that speak to that intent. The Institute’s work is focused primarily on the senior elite athletes and teams and the National Governing Body (NGB) provide most of the supports to the age-grade programmes. Most institutes of sport and certainly those established in the last 30 years emerge through a variety of lobbying interests into an already occupied space. In the absence of a centralised system, many university departments and individual practitioners have provided support services and NGBs have often developed their own network of support staff.
