ABSTRACT

In today’s complex and rapidly changing societies, young people need to be able to become actors in their own lives, and to design the lives and the careers they want. This chapter will discuss the importance of promoting self-determination and implementing autonomy-supportive interventions that emphasize self-regulated problem solving, goal setting and attainment, and related activities that enable young people to engage in causal action to achieve more positive life and career outcomes. The chapter will examine the role of autonomous motivation, action-control beliefs, hope, and causal action in the development and emergence of self-determination, and will overview autonomy-supportive interventions that can be implemented by counselors and coaches to promote self-determination and self-regulated goal attainment.
