ABSTRACT
My dissertation chair informed me that the possibility of anyone EVER reading my dissertation in its entirety was nil. She said that dissertation committees were like people sitting around a table and eating an elephant: Each person was only interested in his or her own piece. So if I thought that my dissertation had to be a wonderful scientific contribution that would change the way people viewed the world, I needed to adjust my expectations, relax, and JUST DO IT.
