ABSTRACT
Start early. Find out about the dissertation/thesis process. Talk to your major professor/advisor about timelines, departmental policies, formats, and anything else you can possibly think of. If your major professor does not want to talk about it, then find another professor who will. This may also be an indication that you do not want this person to serve as the director of your dissertation/thesis since you will be meeting with him or her a lot.
