ABSTRACT
Factitious disorder with physical symptoms is characterized by the intentional production or feigning of physical dysfunction. The symptoms derive from the individual’s psychological need to assume the “sick” or “patient” role. Unlike malingerers, persons with factitious disorders lack readily recognized incentives for their behavior, such as avoiding work or military duty, obtaining drugs or financial compensation, or securing better living conditions. 1
