ABSTRACT

Biogas technology has become an important renewable energy source and a way to recycle both energy and valuable nutrients from organic wastes. Implementation of this technology in rural areas has proved to be beneficial, regardless of how economically developed the country is. This chapter discusses several smaller-scale case studies of biogas production in rural communities in both developing countries (India) and developed countries (UK and Ireland). It chooses three case studies to illustrate biogas production at three increasing sizes and the benefit that rural communities have gained from the installation of anaerobic digestion (AD) plants. The chapter gives a brief overview of the current state of the energy sector in Kazakhstan, the country's aim for the development of renewables and the main strengths that will contribute to future development from our perspective. It also discusses the potential impact of this research on the clean energy sector in Kazakhstan.
