ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the redesign project with a somewhat different emphasis. It concentrates on the ways in which the redesign changed the information and control systems in operation in the department. The analysis of the control systems can also be used as a medium for understanding the implications of job redesign for wider organisational change. The introduction of semi-autonomous work groups had itself changed the information and control systems operating in hard boiled sweets department (HB). Increasingly the significance of the impact of information and control systems for job designs is being recognised. Indeed Hackman and Oldham, in their analysis of organisational context, place such systems alongside the technological and personnel systems. It follows from the analysis in the chapter, that not only is information and control systems central to the design of jobs, but they also provide a medium for understanding the interrelationships between job designs and wider organisational systems.
