ABSTRACT

The goals of physical education (PE) are to help children master a variety of forms of movement, to build a positive attitude about being physically active, to create enjoyment of physical play, and to find one’s niche for lifelong involvement in physical activity. Most students with disabilities can be successfully included in PE This chapter introduces a variety of instructional and curricular modifications to accommodate students with disabilities First general strategies of differentiated instruction and universal design are outlined. This is followed by more specific suggestions for instructional modifications to accommodate how information is presented and the class is organized and curricular and equipment modifications to accommodate children with limited strength, balance, speed, agility and coordination.
