ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors complicate their views of community and argue for an approach to research– practice partnerships (RPPs) that invite people directly affected by educational injustices to participate in analyzing their root causes and generating strategies to address them. It describes overlaps with key elements of RPPs, such as their effort to broaden participation in educational research, their emphasis on relationship building for successful partnerships, and their commitment to producing research that is relevant to practice. The chapter focuses on community engagement and organizing scholarship that critiques traditional patterns of university outreach and offers alternative approaches. It seeks to develop a collaborative research partnership with students who might have special insight into this issue by virtue of their experiences on campus. The chapter seeks to redefine who or what counts as "the community" by connecting with parents outside of an existing nongovernmental organization, school committee, or civic structure.
