ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses issues with accessing finance in India and provides recommendations to access finance in India. The Indian banking structure is undergoing some significant changes and there are problematic issues related in particular to the public sector banks that need to be addressed, if Indian banks are to make positive strides towards being globally competitive and meet the capital needs of foreign entities entering the Indian markets. A country’s financial sophistication has often been gauged by the range and flexibility of its bond market. Indian firms, for a variety of reasons, continue to rely primarily on banks, in particular, the public sector banks, for their financing needs. The Indian government has also implemented some positive policies to enhance the growth potential of the Masala bond market. Economic growth in the twenty-first century will be defined by innovation and entrepreneurship, and the government has to provide a realistic infrastructure to promote scalable entrepreneurial activity in India.
