ABSTRACT

This chapter examines the local governance of invasive and endangered species, especially the involvement of watershed-based conservation authorities (CAs) in Ontario. Invasive species are co-managed in Canada, but as with species at risk, provinces carry the bulk of responsibility given their jurisdiction over public and private lands and wildlife. The chapter focuses on a case study of a web survey. It uses Survey Monkey to create and send a web survey to all 36 CAs in the province, containing 35 questions, including yes/no, list, and open-ended questions. The survey instrument contained three main sections: general familiarity with endangered and invasive species, including management and policy, in Ontario; CA involvement with invasive species management, including activities, landowner outreach, and budgetary matters; and, CA involvement with species at risk management, including activities, landowner outreach, and budgetary matters. The overall purpose was to garner new information about the regular activities of CAs and their spending on species management.
