ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that the pottery sherds Don collected were actually the first evidence of early Neolithic activity in the region of Macedonia in order to trace the thread. It presents the history of research on the early period up to modern times, when the site of Aivatli itself has been systematically investigated and the relevant data retrieved from across Macedonia have redefined the views and perceptions of human societies. British troops aim was to construct a line of defensive works, to fortify the area with trenches and barbed wire, in order to cover any retreat of the troops from the frontline and hinder the pursuit of the enemy. The pottery studied, particularly the painted vessels, is reminiscent of the sherds collected by the British officers, who insightfully observed the similarities with contemporary Thessalian wares. The remains of the tusk are exhibited in the Sedgwick Museum in Cambridge, while the sherds from Aivatli belong to the British Museum collection.
