ABSTRACT

Two facts are often repeated: first, that the world is becoming more and more urbanized, and second, that spending time in nature is good for us. It makes sense that initiatives to make cities greener abound. Studies show that green spaces are good for our brains, are calming (Foglia 2005), and are essential to children's development (Louv 2008). Ecologically speaking, we need green spaces to combat heat islands and to create green corridors that allow plants, insects and animals to move through the city and beyond. Montreal has encouraged many such initiatives, and is lucky enough to have several large parks, often with significant "wild" areas in them.
