ABSTRACT
This introductive chapter – after a brief reconstruction of the peculiar path dependence of Milan, its spatial pattern, as well as its economic and political geography – focuses on the social and spatial manifestations of economic crisis. It does so by adopting an approach that unravels the new productive base of the urban region and the changing role of the urban governance.
