ABSTRACT

An important leadership function is monitoring. This chapter reviews different monitoring orientations related to key leadership responsibilities. The review is organized around three central features: (1) monitoring self, (2) monitoring others, and (3) monitoring the organization. The section on monitoring self reviews core issues associated with leader self-awareness, self-presentation, strategic self-disclosure, and emotional regulation and control on the leader’s part. Monitoring others reviews topics including emotional sensitivity and empathy, performance monitoring, and monitoring teams. Monitoring the organization considers topics such as Organizational Citizenship Behavior and strategic assessments of behavior in the organization, executive leadership, and monitoring organizational identity and image. The chapter concludes with a look towards next steps in the research and practice of leadership and monitoring in organizations.
