ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to contribute to discussions related to boyhood and ethnicities, as well as to methodological and pedagogical discourses on how to talk about everyday sexualities with young people in the school context. It discusses the relevance of analysis with respect to discussions, and pinpoints some relevant threads in public debate in Finland that may affect the ways boys understand the notion of sexual harassment. The chapter overviews the conceptual and methodological framework and presents an analysis that identifies four positionings of boys in relation to harassment: outsider, good guy, harasser and victim. Moreover, the age-related power relations between researcher and research participant in youth studies call for specific ethical considerations when studying sensitive issues such as sexual harassment. The chapter focuses on how young people adopt white perspective and assign value to and construct differences and power relations on the basis of gender and ethnicity.
