ABSTRACT

This chapter analyzes national identity as a negotiation between two concepts, Selbstbild (or national consciousness) and Fremdbild (or international image). It finds a growing status deprivation among certain nations or peoples within nations due to economic circumstances, and a “global rage” that appears to infect several countries. It relates this rage to aspects of national consciousness, including nationalism, patriotism, and pride, and a country’s international image. It explores the link between global rage, and the Brexit movement and the Trump election. It argues that both relate to a perceived decline in international image due to economic and communication factors in the post-Cold War era.
