ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with addressing the question of how to model space-time information from Lloyd's Lists shipping records in order to prepare it for spatial statistical processing. It provides information concerning related studies on spatio-temporal data modeling, followed by details about the model we have developed. The chapter shows how this model is used with an example of hotspot analysis of ship-to-ship "Speakings" information and discuss the results. It deals with two main subjects: spatio-temporal data modeling and spatio-temporal statistics. A geo-database with the introduced data model was designed and populated with the records of speakings information from the years 1851 and 1871. The chapter analyzes the degree of inhomogeneity in the dataset by estimating the (smoothed) intensity of points across space. Modeling and analyzing ship speakings data could reveal useful information about where ship-to-ship interactions have taken place on the high seas.
