ABSTRACT

This chapter shows that Polar Operational Limits Assessment Risk Indexing System (POLARIS) provides an excellent risk assessment framework for assessing and visualizing ship operational limits over large areas. It relies on the first version of the POLARIS, which was a framework under development. The boxplot visualization is efficient in summarizing the POLARIS safe operational limits for each vessel ice class in every zone of the Canadian Arctic. An updated version has been published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on the 26th of June 2016. The bar graph matrix depicts the natural spatiotemporal variation in sea ice conditions. Ice conditions have a considerable temporal impact on maritime traffic in the Arctic. The navigation conditions including ice coverage, ice classification, and meteorology are extensively monitored by satellite and forecasted since the 1970s. The ice classification of a ship is the categorization of the vessel according to its ability to navigate in ice conditions based on the strength of its hull.
