ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the use of network theory as a technological tool to provide cabotage and sea transportation in general with strategic information to assist logistics managers in making more assertive decisions. Hence, the main objective was to analyze Brazilian cabotage between 2010 and 2015 with the support of network theory. It presents the main fundamentals of network theory and its applications to logistics using the waterway transportation mode. The chapter highlights the movement of cargo through cabotage as a type of maritime transportation that uses the country's coast as the main waterway to transport goods by virtue of its current growth and investment trends from institutions such as the Brazilian Ministry of Transportation. Ports offer different levels of activities and promote the outflow of products, thus contributing to converting a country's wealth into currency. Network theory has been prominent in research seeking to understand the structure and dynamics of systems that contain connected elements.
