ABSTRACT

Professional surveys show that involvement in forensic activities has become a common part of professional practice for clinical neuropsychologists. Forensic neuropsychology has also become prominent within the neuropsychological literature and at relevant professional meetings. This chapter considers forensic neuropsychology to include all neuropsychological practice in which a clinician provides evaluation or consultative services to an individual involved in a proceeding that is potentially adversarial in nature. In the same interval of time in which forensic neuropsychology has grown substantially, health care reimbursement models changed meaningfully. The chapter covers some of the major roles for neuro-psychologists within the forensic arena. It discusses two common areas of acquired brain injury civil litigation (e.g., TBI and toxic exposure). The chapter also discusses two common settings within which neuropsychologists frequently play a role (i.e., disability examinations and school consultations). It considers the possible involvement of neuropsychologists in evaluation of competence and determinations specific to criminal litigation.
