ABSTRACT
The Indian indentureship system was meant to safeguard the interests of the labourers and ensure profit maximization on the plantations. The Indian labourers signed a contract at the port of embarkation at Garden Reach, Calcutta. The general stipulations of the contracts changed during the course of the indentureship period and the actual working of the contracts varied according to estate and colony.
