ABSTRACT
Muslims from a variety of social backgrounds and regions of India settled in the colonial settlement of Mauritius, mostly as providers of skilled and unskilled labour. They integrated into the hierarchically organized multi-ethnic society and adopted various strategies for upward mobility.
