ABSTRACT

Unscheduled care is delivered through a variety of care settings, ranging from NHS Direct (NHSD) to minor injury units (MIUs) to GP surgeries to emergency departments, and can be delivered as telephone advice or in face-to-face consultations (Fig. 5.1). The public find the variety of care settings available to them quite confusing, especially as the title of the unit or department often does not accurately reflect the care provided, and patients can by default find themselves in the wrong service for their needs (which can sometimes lead to their being labelled as ‘inappropriate attenders’).
