ABSTRACT

There is no gainsaying that culture is dynamic and plays a significant role in the delivery and practice of mental health services globally. This chapter, therefore explores mental health practice in Nigeria within its cultural, historical and socio-political milieu. In addressing the historical development, the Indigenous or traditional approaches are emphasized. In addition, factors such as colonialism and Western influences as well as training and development, accreditation, licensure and certification issues that shaped the emergence of contemporary or orthodox mental health practice in Nigeria are discussed. Case studies are used to illustrate the integration of traditional and contemporary approaches, and also highlight the challenges that are evident. Recommendations are suggested for developing a positive, innovative and proactive mental health practice in Nigeria within a globalizing mental health field.
