ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of a key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book describes innovative pedagogical interventions in study abroad programming that have been designed to enhance the intercultural learning and engagement of students. Most books include a systematic investigation of the intervention, some discussion of the benefits and challenges, and recommendations for other study abroad educators who may wish to try out the approach in their own study abroad context. Educational institutions can no longer send students abroad with the naive expectation that most participants will enhance their second-language proficiency and intercultural sensitivity, and become more global-minded simply by being present in the host environment. Undeniably, intercultural educators and study abroad professionals are central to the success of intercultural learning and engagement in study abroad contexts.
