ABSTRACT

Older migrants are generally left out of discussions on migration and development, since they are seen as ‘unproductive’ and ‘vulnerable’. Defining older migrants is challenging because of competing socio-cultural models of ‘active ageing’ vs frailty in old age. The conceptual framework of this chapter blends together the ‘ageing–migration nexus’ with the ‘migration–development nexus’ and examines four ways in which ageing migrants (and non-migrants) interact with the process of development. These are: (i) intergenerational care in the context of uneven global development, (ii) international retirement migration, (iii) older economic migrants, and (iv) older return migrants.
