ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides in-depth analysis of the evolution of international policy to prevent and respond to human trafficking. It highlights identification of critical international frameworks and assessment of their impacts with particular attention to victims’ rights versus state interests. The book traces the discussion by asking where is the justice in the criminal justice system, especially in regard to how justice is served as it relates to sex trafficking. It examines a number of challenges the criminal justice system faces when confronted with human trafficking, and what practitioners need to know in order to overcome the obstacles confronting them in their efforts to combat human trafficking. The book also provides information about international law concerning human trafficking and describes the elements of the crime of human trafficking as defined under US federal law.
