ABSTRACT

In this chapter, the authors present their analytic attention to pathways and spaces, movement and rhythms, and the generative potential of boundary crossing. The authors propose the constructs of rhythm, attunement, and dexterity as conceptual and analytic tools to inform their understanding of pathways and boundaries as "hidden energies" for learning and community transformation. Parents and community developers talked often of making pathways for everyone who "wants to come along" and opening the doors in intentional ways. The Double Dutch conversation continued in our meeting, focusing on "getting the rhythm" so that the authors can jump in. They proposed "pathways in" taking shape as opening doors by creating spaces for voices. The themes of boundaries, movement, and rhythms have permeated our data from the beginning of this long-term collaborative ethnography. The authors had adopted the theoretical metaphor of rhizomes to bring attention to pathways and their transformational potential.
