ABSTRACT

This chapter provides an overview of the unorganised manufacturing sector (UMS) in the whole of northeast India along with state-specific findings. It considers the growth and productivity dynamics of the UMS in the north-eastern region (NER) vis-a-vis the national scenario in the period 2000-2005, the latest period for which comparable data on unorganised manufacturing is available. The chapter identifies the dynamic segments for each of the states in the NER. NER is abundantly endowed with rich biodiversity, hydro-potential, oil and gas, coal, limestone and forest wealth. It is ideally suited for a whole range of plantation crops, spices, fruits and vegetables, flowers and herbs, much of which could be processed and exported to neighbouring countries. Agriculture and forestry is the core sector on which the economy of this region is planned to be built. The region's economy however can generate a surplus through ample production and export of forest products.
